This course examines both the role of money in the economy from a functional and macro-economic perspective as well as the structure and functions of the most important financial institutions and markets. Relationships between the financial markets and institutions of different countries will be emphasized. Topics covered include: the roles of various central banks in monetary policy decision-making, interest rate and exchange rate determination, the relationship between money and economic activity, and the organization and importance of money markets, capital markets, markets for derivative instruments, commercial banks and other intermediaries.
